10 KEYS FOR DEVELOPING THE CHARACTER OF SELF-CONTROL

"Nothing sustains a glorious destiny or future like character." - Esther Chika

Self-control is the ability to regulate and manage one's own behavior, thoughts, and emotions in a way that aligns with long-term goals or values, even in the face of temptation or distraction.

It involves resisting immediate desires and choosing actions that serve a larger purpose.

It involves delaying gratification, setting limits, and avoiding impulsive or harmful behaviors.

10 KEYS YOU MUST KNOW

1. SET CLEAR GOALS

Define what you want to achieve and break it down into smaller, and manageable steps. Clear goals provide a sense of direction and help you stay focused.

2. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS.

Cultivate mindfulness through meditation or other techniques. Being mindful about things enhances your self-awareness. It helps you observe your thoughts, emotions, and urges without immediately reacting to them.

3. IDENTIFY TRIGGERS

Pay attention to the situations, people, and emotions that tend to trigger impulsive behavior and hinder your self-control. By identifying these triggers, you can develop strategies to manage them effectively.

4.DELAY GRATIFICATION

Practice delaying immediate gratification in favor of long-term rewards. This can be as simple as waiting a few minutes before indulging in a tempting treat or impulsive buying.

5. DEVELOP A ROUTINE

Establishing a structured routine can help you build self-discipline and reduce reliance on willpower alone. Plan your days, allocate time for important tasks, and stick to your schedule.

6. CREATE ACCOUNTABILITY

Share your goals and progress with others who can hold you accountable. This could be a trusted friend, family member, or a mentor who can provide support and encouragement.

7. PRACTICE SELF-CARE

Take care of your physical and mental well-being. They directly influence your self-control. Get enough sleep, exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals, and manage stress effectively.

8. LEARN FROM SETBACKS.

Understand that self-control is a skill that takes time to develop. If you stumble or give in to temptation, don't be too hard on yourself.

Instead, reflect on what happened, learn from it, and use that knowledge to improve yourself nex time.

9. BUILD HEALTHY HABITS.

Cultivate habits that promote self-control.  This can include regular exercise, reading, and practicing a hobby.

Engaging in activities that require discipline and focus can strengthen your overall self-control.

10. SEEK SUPPORT.

If you find it challenging to develop self-control on your own, consider seeking professional help or joining a support group.

Therapists, coaches, or self-help groups like The School Of Friendship, can provide guidance and additional resources.

I hope these ten (10) will empower you to stay on course in developing the character of Self-Control. Let's stay connected at The School Of Friendship for all subsequent sessions.
